TTooth decay is a very common health problem and everyone can have it. If they are not treated, they can create high sensitivity or pain, even cause infections or diseases. Learn a little more about the appearance of tooth decay and how you can prevent and treat it.

What is tooth decay?

They are damaged parts on the surface of the teeth that become holes. At first, they look like white or brown spots but later they create holes that grow.

The accumulation of dental plaque allows the bacteria contained therein to convert sugars into acids that damage the enamel.

Factors associated with tooth decay

  • Diet rich in sugars: if after consuming foods with a lot of sugar the teeth are not cleaned, the bacteria in the mouth feed on them and form plaque. The acids generated by this plaque affect the tooth enamel by removing its minerals. As the wear of the enamel continues to increase, openings are generated through the layers of the tooth until they cause sensitivity or pain.

  • Poor oral hygiene: If there is not adequate cleaning of the teeth, bacterial plaque is created, which in turn causes the appearance of cavities. Either because you do not have the habit of brushing your teeth frequently or because the position of the teeth does not allow proper cleaning.

  • Susceptibility of the person: Some people have a higher risk of developing cavities. For example, if they do not generate enough saliva due to illness or medication use. Or if they have fluoride deficiency (a mineral that prevents cavities). Age can also play a role as many older adults have more wear and tear on their teeth.

Take care of your smile

Avoid the appearance of cavities by practicing good dental hygiene and avoiding foods rich in sugar. Remember to go to the dental office regularly for check-ups. You can also get professional cleanings when your dentist tells you to.
